Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent with a bleak future, is given a miraculous chance to change his fate when he throws himself in front of a moving car to save a young boy. His ultimate sacrifice is so out of character that the spirit realm’s authorities are not yet ready to let him go. Koenma, the heir to the spirit realm’s throne, offers Yuusuke the chance to reclaim his life by completing a series of tasks. Yuusuke enlists ex-rival Kazuma Kuwabara and two demons with criminal histories, Hiei and Kurama, to assist him in his endeavour. They train and fight together against enemies who would endanger humanity’s very existence.
27. Darling in the FranXX
In the distant future, giant beasts known as Klaxosaurs have driven humanity to near-extinction, forcing the survivors to seek refuge in massive fortress cities known as Plantations. Children raised here are trained in boy-girl pairs to pilot giant mechas known as FranXX—the only weapons known to be effective against Klaxosaurs. These children, bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, know nothing of the outside world and can only prove their existence by defending their race.
Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost motivation and self-confidence as a result of a failed aptitude test. Hiro retreats to a forest lake after missing his class’ graduation ceremony, where he meets a mysterious girl with two horns growing out of her head. She introduces herself as Zero Two, the codename of an infamous FranXX pilot known as the “Partner Killer.” The Plantation is rocked by an unexpected Klaxosaur attack before Hiro can digest the encounter.
Zero Two engages the creature in her FranXX, but it sustains significant damage in the fight and crashes near Hiro. When Zero Two discovers that her partner has been killed, she invites Hiro to pilot the mecha with her, and the pair easily defeats the Klaxosaur in the ensuing battle. Hiro has been given a second chance at redemption with a new partner by his side, but at what cost?
26. Blue Exorcist
Humans and demons are two sides of the same coin, as are their respective worlds, Assiah and Gehenna. The only way to travel between realms is through possession, as in ghost stories. However, Satan, the ruler of Gehenna, is unable to find a suitable host and thus remains imprisoned in his world. In a desperate attempt to defeat Assiah, he sends his son instead, intending for him to grow into a vessel capable of being possessed by the demon king.
Ao no Exorcist follows Rin Okumura, who appears to be an ordinary, slightly troubled adolescent—that is, until he is ambushed by demons one day. His world is turned upside down when he discovers that he is, in fact, Satan’s son, and that his demon father wishes for him to return so that they can defeat Assiah together. Instead of joining the king of Gehenna, Rin decides to begin training to become an exorcist so that he can fight alongside his brother Yukio to defend Assiah.
25. High School DxD
Issei Hyoudou, a high school student, is your typical pervert who spends his days peeping on women and fantasising about having his own harem one day. When a beautiful girl asks Issei out on a date, things appear to be looking up for him, but she turns out to be a fallen angel who brutally kills him! However, he is given a second chance at life when beautiful senior student Rias Gremory, a top-class devil, resurrects him as her servant, recruiting Issei into the school’s Occult Research club.

The famous “Seven Wonders” that seem to exist in every school are a staple of Japanese urban legends. One of the most well-known of these stories is that of Hanako-san, a young girl’s ghost who haunts the school’s restrooms.
Hanako-legend san’s is told differently at Kamome Academy. Rumor has it that if one is successful in summoning Hanako-san, she will grant her summoner any wish. Many people have tried to contact her, enticed by the gossip, but each attempt has failed. However, when Nene Yashiro, a young woman hoping for romantic fortune, summons Hanako-san, she discovers that the rumoured “girl” is actually a boy!
Following a series of unfortunate events involving Nene’s romantic desires, she finds herself unwillingly entangled in the world of the supernatural, working as Hanako-assistant. kun’s Soon after, she discovers Hanako-lesser-known kun’s duty: preserving the delicate balance between mortals and apparitions.
22. The Irregular at Magic High School
Magic, long thought to be folklore and fairy tales, has become a systematised technology and is taught as a technical skill at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Students at First High School, the institution for magicians, are divided into two groups based on their entrance exam scores: “Blooms,” those with high scores, are assigned to the First Course, while “Weeds,” reserve students, are assigned to the Second Course.

21. Log Horizon
After the game’s latest update, thirty thousand befuddled Japanese gamers are whisked from their everyday lives into the world of the popular MMORPG, Elder Tale—unable to log out. Shiroe, a socially awkward college student, is among them. His confusion and shock last only a moment as, as a veteran of the game, he immediately sets out to explore the boundaries of his new reality.
Shiroe must learn to live in this new world, leading others and negotiating with the NPC “natives” in order to bring stability to Akihabara, the virtual city. He is joined by his unlucky friend Naotsugu, who has logged in for the first time in years only to find himself trapped, and Akatsuki, a petite but fierce assassin who refers to Shiroe as her master. Log Horizon is a fantasy, adventure, and political story that explores the elements of gaming through the eyes of a master strategist attempting to make the best of a perplexing situation.
20. Prison School
Hachimitsu Private Academy, located on the outskirts of Tokyo, is a prestigious all-girls boarding school known for its high-quality education and disciplined students. This is about to change, thanks to a revision of the school’s most famous policy, which allows boys to enrol as well.
At the start of the first semester under this new decree, only five boys were accepted, effectively dividing the student body into a ratio of 200 girls to one boy. Kiyoshi, Gakuto, Shingo, Andre, and Jo are thrown out without a chance to make a good first impression. Unable to communicate with their female classmates, the eager boys embarked on a far more dangerous mission: peeping into the girls’ bath!

However, Sakuta Azusagawa, a high school student, knows from personal experience that it is very real and is quite common in his school.
Mai Sakurajima is a third-year high school student who rose to fame as a child actress in her youth but recently ended her promising career for reasons unknown to the public. She is well known throughout the school, but no one dares to interact with her—that is, until Sakuta notices her wandering the library in a bunny girl costume. Despite her outfit, no one seems to notice her, and when he confronts her, he realises she is another victim of Puberty Syndrome. As Sakuta tries to assist Mai in her situation, his actions bring him into contact with more girls infected with the enigmatic disease.
18. Highschool of the Dead
The dead began to rise unexpectedly, and Japan was thrown into complete chaos. 17. Snow White with the Red Hair
Shirayuki, despite her name meaning “snow white,” is a cheerful, red-haired girl living in Tanbarun who works diligently as an apothecary at her herbal shop. Her life is turned upside down when she is noticed by Tanbarun’s silly prince, Prince Raji, who then tries to force her to become his concubine. Shirayuki cuts her long red hair and flees into the forest, where she is rescued from Raji by Zen Wistalia, the second prince of a neighbouring country, and his two aides. Shirayuki decides to pursue a career as the court herbalist in Zen’s country, Clarines, in the hopes of repaying her debt to the trio someday.
Shirayuki’s journey to a new life at Clarines’ royal palace, as well as Zen’s quest to become a prince worthy of his title, are both depicted in Akagami no Shirayuki-hime. Shirayuki and Zen gradually learn to support each other as loyal friendships and deadly enemies form as they walk their own paths.
16. Elfen Lied
Lucy is a “Diclonius,” a special breed of human born with a short pair of horns and invisible telekinetic hands, which makes her a victim of the government’s inhumane scientific experimentation. However, when an opportunity to flee presents itself, Lucy, corrupted by confinement and torture, unleashes a torrent of bloodshed as she flees her captors.
During her breakout, she suffers a crippling head injury, leaving her with a split personality: a harmless child with limited speech capacity. In this state of flux, she comes across two college students, Kouta and his cousin Yuka, who unknowingly take in an injured fugitive, unaware of her murderous tendencies. This act of kindness will transform their lives, as they are soon drawn into the shadowy world of government secrecy and conspiracy.
15. Angels of Death
Rachel Gardner’s eyes are lifeless and dead, and she wishes to die. She wakes up in a building’s basement with no idea how or why she got there. She comes across a bandaged murderer named Zack who is attempting to flee. Rachel and Zack set out to ascend through the building floor by floor until they escape, with Zack promising to kill her as soon as he is free.
However, as they progress upward, they meet more twisted people, all of whom appear to be acquainted with Rachel. What is her relationship to the building, and why was she assigned to it? With a new boss on each floor, will Rachel and Zack be able to fulfil their wishes?
14. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
A Magi is a magician with such a strong affinity for magic that they can be said to shape the world. During his travels, Aladdin meets Alibaba Saluja and leads him to a nearby Dungeon. With this newfound friendship, they embark on an epic journey around the world, encountering various irregularities that appear to be more frequent than ever.
13. Guilty Crown
The Apocalypse Virus spread across Japan on December 24, 2029, the day colloquially known as the “Lost Christmas,” killing its citizens and plunging the country into complete chaos. In an effort to restore order, the UN dispatches the GHQ to assist with the crisis by containing the outbreak while simultaneously removing all political autonomy. A decade later, the country is still under their control, unable to escape their draconian rule.
Frustrated with the state of the country, the Funeral Parlor resistance group seeks to free Japan from the GHQ. The group, led by the charismatic Gai Tsutsugami, plots to steal a vial containing the “Void Genome” in order to further their goals. The vial ends up in the hands of internet vocalist Inori Yuzuriha, who becomes the target of the GHQ’s Anti-Bodies forces. She seeks refuge in a warehouse after having nowhere else to go, where she meets Shuu Ouma, a socially awkward high school student who is a huge fan of her music.
Shuu is drawn into the conflict the moment he saves Inori, and the Void Genome shatters in his hand, bestowing the “Power of the Kings” upon him. Shuu must now fight to liberate Japan from its cruel oppressors while learning how to control his magnificent new ability.
12. Plunderer
Alcia is a world ruled by “Counts”: numbers engraved on a person’s body that represent any number related to their life. In Alcia, these Counts determine a person’s social status and power. If a person’s Count reaches zero, he or she is sent to the Abyss, a place said to be worse than death.
Hina, a traveller whose Count is determined by the distance travelled, saw her mother being dragged down into the Abyss. Determined to fulfil her mother’s final wishes, she embarks on a journey in search of the legendary Aces—heroes of the three-hundred-year-old war who wore a white star next to their Count.
Hina meets Licht Bach, a mysterious masked man with a negative Count, and Nana, the owner of a tavern, while wandering around. Hina is tricked into fighting a military soldier while she is having a good time. Despite his negative count, however, Licht saves Hina and reveals that he has another count, one with a white star, one of a legendary Ace.
Plunderer follows Hina and other Alcia residents as they learn the truth about their world, the Abyss, and the legendary Aces.
11. Date A Live
A supermassive “spatial quake”—a phenomenon involving unknown space vibrations—devastated the Eurasian continent thirty years ago, killing over 150 million people. Since then, these quakes have struck the world on an irregular basis, albeit on a smaller scale.
Shidou Itsuka appears to be an ordinary high school student who lives with his younger sister, Kotori. When an impending spatial quake threatens Tengu City’s safety, he rushes to save her, only to be caught in the ensuing eruption. At its source, he discovers a mysterious girl who is revealed to be a “Spirit,” an otherworldly entity whose appearance causes a spatial quake. Soon after, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between the girl and the Anti-Spirit Team, a ruthless strike force dedicated to the annihilation of Spirits.
However, there is a third party who believes in the salvation of the spirits: “Ratatoskr,” which is surprisingly led by Shidou’s younger sister! Following the battle, Kotori forcibly recruits Shidou, offering him an alternative method of dealing with the Spirits’ threat—make them fall in love with him. Now, the fate of the world is dependent on his dating prowess, as he seeks out Spirits to charm them.
10. Say “I Love You.”
Friends will only let you down—that is the sad truth Mei Tachibana has lived with since her so-called friends wrongfully blamed her for the death of a class pet in grade school. She has avoided people since then in order to avoid being hurt again. Mei’s life, however, begins to change dramatically when a misunderstanding in high school leads her to meet popular student Yamato Kurosawa.
Yamato is intrigued by her and insists on being her friend, despite Mei’s objections. However, when a dangerous situation ends with Yamato kissing Mei to save her from the unwanted attention of a stalker, Mei develops feelings for him. Following her discovery that their feelings are mutual, they begin dating, and she gains not only a boyfriend, but also friends. Mei, on the other hand, finds it difficult to adjust to this new way of life, especially when it comes to expressing her true feelings for Yamato.
Despite their new relationship’s misunderstandings, each other’s attentions, and the attentions of other girls, Mei and Yamato gradually grow closer and learn the true meaning of those three little words: “I love you.”
9. Black Lagoon
Yamato is intrigued by her and insists on being her friend, despite Mei’s objections. But what happens when a dangerous situation is over? Within Thailand, there is Roanapur, a depraved, crime-ridden city where not even the authorities or churches are safe from the grasp of corruption. The city is notorious for being the centre of illegal activities and operations, often fueled by local crime syndicates. It is a haven for convicts and degenerates alike.
Enter Rokurou Okajima, an ordinary Japanese businessman who has been living a dull and monotonous life until he gets his chance for a change of pace with a delivery trip to Southeast Asia. His business trip quickly takes a turn for the worse when Rokurou is kidnapped by Black Lagoon, a mercenary group operating in Roanapur. The group intends to use him as a bargaining chip in failed negotiations. Rokurou decides to join Black Lagoon after being abandoned and betrayed by his former employer. To survive, he must quickly adapt to his new surroundings and brace himself for the ensuing bloodshed and tribulation.
8. Danganronpa: The Animation
Makoto Naegi, a teenager with no exceptional talent, is surprised to learn that he has been accepted into Hope’s Peak Private Academy, an elite school that attracts the best students from a variety of fields. Despite his belief that his admission was a fluke, Naegi is overjoyed to be attending a school that is known for ensuring the success of its graduates. He enters the prestigious academy’s front doors, determined.
However, after losing consciousness inside, Naegi awakens in what appears to be an abandoned classroom. Naegi, unable to comprehend how he arrived, begins to explore and, to his surprise, discovers his classmates gathered in the gym. While everyone is trying to figure out what happened, the school principal—Monokuma, a robotic teddy bear—approaches them. The mysterious toy explains that the freshmen are trapped inside the school and have only one way out—kill a classmate without being noticed.
Tension rises as Naegi and his classmates realise they have two options: participate in Monokuma’s killing game or live together in the school for the rest of their lives.
7. Rurouni Kenshin
Hitokiri Battousai was a legendary assassin who lived in the final years of the Bakumatsu era. He was feared throughout the country as a merciless killer, but mysteriously vanished at the height of the Japanese Revolution. Although it has been ten years since then, the mere mention of Battousai still strikes fear into the hearts of war veterans.
Unbeknownst to them, Battousai has abandoned his bloodthirsty lifestyle in an attempt to atone for his sins, and is now known as Kenshin Himura, a wandering swordsman with a positive attitude and a strong will. Kenshin vows never to kill again and devotes his life to protecting the weak. One day, he runs into Kaoru Kamiya at her kendo dojo, which is under attack by an impostor posing as Battousai. After receiving assistance from Kenshin, Kaoru allows him to stay at the dojo, causing the former assassin to temporarily halt his travels.
6. Gintama
Edo was a city that embodied the zeal and ambition of samurai from all over the country. However, following feudal Japan’s surrender to powerful aliens known as the “Amanto,” those ambitions now appear to be unattainable. With the once-powerful shogunate rebuilt as a puppet government, a new law is enacted that immediately prohibits the use of swords in public.
Gintoki Sakata, an eccentric silver-haired man who always carries a wooden sword and maintains his samurai status despite the ban, enters the picture. Gintoki frequently embarks on endeavours to help others as the founder of Yorozuya, a small business for odd jobs—though usually in rather strange and unexpected ways.
The Yorozuya, aided by Shinpachi Shimura, a boy with glasses who claims to be learning the ways of the samurai; Kagura, a tomboyish girl with superhuman strength and an endless appetite; and Sadaharu, their giant pet dog who loves biting on people’s heads, encounter everything from alien royalty to scuffles with local gangs in Edo’s ever-changing world.
5. No Game, No Life
Disboard is a world ruled by Tet, the One True God, and home to sixteen sentient races. Imanity, the lowest of the sixteen, is made up of humans, a race with no affinity for magic. Humankind appears to have no way out of their predicament in a place where everything is decided through simple games—but the arrival of two outsiders changes everything.
On Earth, stepsiblings Sora and Shiro are inseparable shut-ins who dominate various online games as “Blank.” While they are well-known on the internet, the pair believes that life is just another boring game. They are suddenly transported to Disboard after responding to a message from an unknown user. Tet, the mysterious sender, informs them about the world’s unbreakable rules. Following Tet’s departure, Sora and Shiro begin their search for more information and a place to stay, which leads them to Elkia—last Imanity’s remaining kingdom.
There, the duo meets Stephanie Dola, an emotional young woman vying for the throne of the kingdom. In desperation, she attempts to reclaim her father’s throne, but her folly renders her goal impossible to achieve. Sora and Shiro are inspired by the girl’s motivation and passion and decide to help Stephanie get Elkia back on its feet, ultimately aiming to become the new rulers of the enigmatic realm.
4. Durarara!!
Amid many strange rumours and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants in Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro, one urban legend stands out above the rest—the existence of a headless “Black Rider” who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.
Mikado Ryuugamine has always desired the excitement of city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend persuades him to relocate to Tokyo. Seeing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes appear to have already been granted. However, as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, as well as Ikebukuro’s most colourful residents, become entangled in the commotion erupting in their city.

Gol D. Roger was known as the “Pirate King,” the most powerful and infamous person to have ever sailed the Grand Line. The World Government’s capture and execution of Roger caused a global upheaval. His final words before death revealed the existence of the world’s greatest treasure, One Piece. This revelation ushered in the Grand Age of Pirates, a time when men dreamed of finding One Piece, which promised an unlimited amount of riches and fame, as well as the pinnacle of glory and the title of Pirate King.
Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies the stereotype of a pirate. Rather than the popular image of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate ransacking villages for fun, Luffy’s motivation for being a pirate is pure wonder: the prospect of an exciting adventure that will lead him to intriguing people and, eventually, the promised treasure. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, encountering crazy adventures, unravelling dark mysteries, and battling formidable foes all in the pursuit of the most coveted of all fortunes—One Piece.
2. Fruits Basket
Tooru Honda has always been fascinated by the Chinese Zodiac story that her beloved mother told her when she was a child. However, a sudden family tragedy alters her life, and subsequent events leave her completely alone. Tooru is now forced to live in a tent, but she has no idea that her temporary residence is on the private property of the illustrious Souma family. She meets Shigure, an older Souma cousin, and Yuki, the “prince” of her school one day after stumbling upon their home. Tooru explains that she lives nearby, but when the Soumas see her walking back to her tent one night, they discover her well-kept secret of being homeless.
Things start to look up for Tooru when they offer to take her in after hearing about her predicament. Soon after, however, she becomes embroiled in a fight between Yuki and his fiery cousin, Kyou. While attempting to stop them, she discovers that the Souma family has their own well-kept secret: whenever they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they transform into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
Tooru will discover that living with the Soumas is an unexpected adventure filled with laughter and romance as a result of this new revelation.
1. Kimetsu no Yaiba
Tanjirou Kamado has carried the burden of supporting his family on his shoulders since his father’s death. Despite living in poverty on a remote mountain, the Kamado family leads a relatively peaceful and happy life. Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village one day to make some money selling charcoal. Night falls on his way back, forcing Tanjirou to seek refuge in the home of a strange man, who warns him of the presence of flesh-eating demons in the woods at night.
When he returns home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight: his entire family has been slaughtered. Worse, his sister Nezuko, who has been transformed into a bloodthirsty demon, is the sole survivor. Tanjirou, consumed by rage and hatred, vows to avenge his family and stand by his only remaining sibling. Tanjirou will do whatever it takes, alongside the mysterious Demon Slayer Corps, to slay the demons and protect the last vestiges of his beloved sister’s humanity.
