During World War I, the Japanese used a powerful technique known as onmyodou magic. Later, the infamous Yakou Tsuchimikado performed the ‘Taizan Fukun Ritual,’ which would eventually establish Japan as a formidable force. However, the ritual goes horribly wrong, resulting in what is now known as the “Great Spiritual Disaster,” an incident that has haunted the entire Japanese continent to this day. Furthermore, the Onmyo Agency was established to monitor supernatural activity in the area and combat any spirits or demons that made their way into the real world.

Onmyodou has become more refined, simplified, and modernised in recent years, with applications in medicine and technology. However, not everyone can afford this power, as demonstrated by Harutora, a member of one of the Tsuchimikado’s branch families who was born without spiritual power. Despite being born into a prominent onmyoji family, his life has become meaningless because he lacks spiritual power.

But he does recall making a promise to his engaged childhood friend Natsume, the Tsuchimikado family heir and Yakou’s alleged reincarnation. Regardless of his background, all Harutora ever desired was to live a normal and peaceful life. But when a group of Onmyo Agency employees attempt to recreate the same tragedy that led to Japan’s demise two years ago, he decides to take matters into his own hands by fighting alongside Natsume as her shikigami (supporter).

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

Episodes:26

Aired: Spring 2014

The series takes place in a world with an alternate history, where magic exists and has been refined by modern technology. The ability to use magic, on the other hand, is determined by genetics, limiting the number of magicians in existence. Following the 20-year-long Third World War, which reduced the world’s population to 3 billion people, the world’s superpowers shifted to four countries: the United States of North America (USNA), the New Soviet Union, the Great Asian Alliance, and Japan.

In Japan, the magic community is governed informally by the Ten Master Clans rather than the government. Because of the scarcity of magicians, they are treated as a commodity and are compelled to attend magic-related schools and professions. In Japan, there are nine magic high schools, each of which specialises in a different aspect of magic and is simply referred to by its number.

Tatsuya Shiba is a bodyguard for his sister Miyuki Shiba, who is also a candidate for the leadership of the Yotsuba clan, one of the Ten Master Clans that govern Japan’s magicians. They enrol in First High School, which divides its students according to their magical abilities. Miyuki is a first-year student who is regarded as one of the best, whereas Tatsuya is a second-year student who is regarded as magically inept. Tatsuya’s technical knowledge, combat abilities, and unique magic techniques, on the other hand, cause people to regard him as an outlier in the school’s standardised rankings.
